What Are the Pros and Cons of Becoming a Teacher?

When considering a career in education, both the pros and cons must be taken into account, as this might be something that you do for the next 50 years. Of course the main pro is that you get to help other people. Although I am technically still only an undergraduate, my experience in being a paid tutor for the college has affirmed my choice to become a teacher. There is a great sense of pride that I get when a student is really struggling to understand something and I am able to present the material in a different light, pushing them just enough to understand the information better. It is especially rewarding to see how excited they are to tell me that they did better on their most recent exam, thanking me for my assistance. It is this joy of helping others to achieve their goals that affirms my belief that I am on the right track in becoming a teacher.

However, there are several cons that must be taken into consideration. As stated in the Chapter 1 Summary, teachers often feel that they are not paid enough in relation to the amount of time and effort they put in. This is because a teacher's work is not finished once the bell rings and the students are dismissed at the end of the day. They often stay behind in the classroom for several hours grading papers and preparing the next day's lesson time for which they are not being paid, even taking their materials home with them to continue working. Teachers also often feel that they have a lack of support from administration when dealing with parents, as the administrators are often quick to side with the parents to avoid any external monetary involvement. They also often feel that too much emphasis is placed on students' scores and do not believe that their quality as a teacher should be judged by the standardized test grades of their class. Despite these cons, it is important for teachers to keep their heads up and advocate for their rights and the rights of fellow teachers in order to best teach their students.
